Our Viticulturist is Mark
Whisson. Mark graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1975
with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Botany and
Biochemistry. He completed an Honours degree in 1976 and gained a
Master of Science in Plant Biochemistry from the University of
Alberta in 1981.
Mark has worked for Petaluma as
their vineyard manager, group viticulturist and laboratory manager
from 1983 to 1989 and filled a similar role for Ian Wilson of
Wilson's Wines from 1989 to 1991. Since then he has managed his own
viticultural companies, Trig Point and Magdalene Viticultural
Consulting.
Mark has successfully planted and
managed 91 new vineyards that cover approximately 2000 ha, mostly
in the Adelaide hills but also in the Clare Valley, McLaren Vale,
Langhorne Creek, Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley.
He has held various industry
positions including,
*Founding Vice Chairman of the
Adelaide Hills Vine Improvement Society, 1988-1989.
*Chairman of the Adelaide Hills
Vine Improvement Society, 1989-1992
*Secretary of the Adelaide Hill
Vine Improvement Society, 2002-2005.
Mark has written various articles
on pruning, spraying and training of vines over the years for the
Australian and New Zealand Grape Grower and Wine Maker and National
Grape Growers magazines.
He delivered a paper on Dryland
Viticulture at the 2004 Australian Wine Industry Technical
Conference and one on training young vines at the 1995 ASVO
National Seminar.
